Students, Graduates, and Teachers in the News 2005StudentsAt the North American Music Festival in Hershey, Pennsylvania, in May Glen Cove won first place in mixed chorus, first place in concert band, most outstanding concert band, most outstanding chorus, best overall jazz band, best overall soloist in a concert band (Briget Kotzky on flute), and best overall soloist in a chorus (baritone Tim Brady). (Glen Cove Record Pilot, 14 July 2005) At the recent News 12 Scholar-Athlete Dinner, Glen Cove High School senior Jesse Abrams was honored along with 29 other athletes from Long Island and presented with a scholarship and plaque. (Glen Cove Record Pilot, 30 June 2005) The Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY College at Old Westbury is proud to announce that Michael Weber of Glen Cove is one of 75 students this year to be named a Long Island Young Scholar of Mathematics and has been accepted by the Institute to pursue mathematics and science studies. Selection implies that a student is among the top one-tenth of one percent in mathematics of all students on Long Island in his or her grade. (Glen Cove Record Pilot, 17 February 2005) Landing School fourth graders Ganesh Shivaram and Caroline Suozzi achieved perfect scores on this year's grade four New York State English Language Arts exam. This annual three day exam tests students in reading comprehension and writing. (Glen Cove Record Pilot, 9 June 2005) The National Society of High School Scholars has announced that Glen Cove High School students Justin Capalbo and Andrew Graf have been selected for membership. The society recognizes the top scholars in the nation and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence. (Glen Cove Record Pilot, 9 June and 23 June 2005) GraduatesMichelle K. Foote is the second recipient of the Grenville Baker Volunteers Scholarship. Michelle graduated from Glen Cove High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society, a scholar-athlete who was on the Principals' List, and Student of the Month for October 2004. Michelle's after school participation included varsity track, the Human Relations Club, Ski club, and captain of the Pep Squad. She volunteered in many community events including Glen Cove's Jazz in the Square, Recycle, and Adopt-A-Spot programs, making quite an impression on mayor Mary Ann Holzkamp, who said of Michelle, "it is unusual to find a young adult with the maturity and sense of responsibility that Michelle displays." Michelle ... represented the Boys and Girls Club in Albany as the club's 2005 Youth of the year. ...She is currently attending Sacred Heart University in Fairfield Connecticut where she plans to major in education and psychology. Eric W. Bolyard, Glen Cove High School class of 2001, has been named to the Dean's List at Boston University for the spring 2005 semester. Victoria was inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, Villanova's communications honor society. Sheri was a graduate of Glen Cove High School in 2001. She will be attending Fairfield University for graduate studies in education. (Glen Cove Record Pilot, 17 February 2005) Nicole Marie Nassani, Glen Cove High School class of 2002, has been named to the Dean's list for the Spring '04 and Fall '05 semesters at Nassau Community College. In December 2004 Nicole was awarded the Nassau County full scholarship and received a Presidential Award for Academic Excellence and the New York State Assembly Certificate of Merit. Stephens, Glen Cove School District's English as a Second Language chairperson and teacher earned her profession's top honor by achieving National Board Certification in 2004 according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. National Board Certification is the highest credential in the teaching profession. Certification is achieved through a rigorous performance-based assessment that takes one and three years to complete and measures what accomplished teachers have learned and are able to carry out.
