Mike Grella, a senior at Glen Cove High School,...has been named an All American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Mike is one of only seven players from New York State to make the team of 72 total players, male and female, chosen nationwide. He is the first All-American soccer player from Glen Cove High School and after a recent tournament in Texas was ranked #1 in the country by national coaches. Andrew James Graf II, a junior at Glen Cove High School, ...(has) been accepted into the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. According to the NYLC, "This is a unique leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. There will be approximately 400 outstanding scholars from around the country."...Andrew was nominated by his guidance counsellor, Laurie Lynn. He takes two advanced placement courses, one college course, and one honors course. He participates in Academic Challenge after school and is treasurer of the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department Explorer Post 520. He plans to attend Duke University and get a Ph.D. in history. Glen Cove High School student Angelica Verrelli, 16, ... recently won state championships in the 16-and-under scholastic women's épee event and silver in the open event (ages 16 to 50). She also brought home a bronze medal from the most recent Empire Sate Games and took second at senior sectional championships and fourth at junior sectional championships, which cover the entire northeast. Glen Cove High School senior Jennifer Lamere has been awarded the Girl Scout Gold Award, joining the ranks of some of the country's most powerful women in business, politics, art, journalism, and the military, including Senator Elizabeth Dole and couture designer Vera Wang. The Girl Scout Gold Award is a culmination of all that has been learned and experienced as a Girl Scout. Upon her graduation, she was awarded the Suzanne M. Huffman Memorial Senior Thesis Prize in Women's Studies for her thesis. ... Carolyne R. Dilgard, GCHS Class of 1955 and Georgetown University Class of 1999, received her law degree with High Honors from Rutgers Law-Camden in May. She was presented with the Blaine E. Capehart Award for legal writing excellence and the Albert P.Blaustein Award for being published in the Rutgers Law Journal. Glen Cove High School graduate Dave Brown was commissioned as an Air Force officer and received his bachelor of science degree from the US Air Force Academy on June 2. Second Lieutenant Brown has been assigned to Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina where he will be a finance officer starting in September. Dave also was recently selected by his lacrosse teammates as the recipient of the Pace Weber Memorial Award ... based on integrity, honesty, a sense of humor, and love for the game. John Manasse, a graduate of the Glen Cove public schools, is now among the most distinguished classical artists of his generation, internationally recognized for his inspiring artistry, unique sound, and charismatic performing style. He started performing early as a member of the Landing School band, then was afforded further enriching opportunities and encouragement from the music faculty in the Finley Middle School and the Glen Cove High School. Manasse has served as principal clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and is now principal clarinetist of the American Ballet Theater Orchestra and the Mostly Mozart Orchestra. Deasy School teacher Angela Zupa has been named Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the Nassau County branch of The New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Ms Zupa can be found after school hours ... coaching junior baseball and basketball through the CYO and Little League and serving on the PTA outreach committee. She lives in Glen Cove with her husband Jeff and son Ryan, a seventh-grade student at the Finley Middle School, and daughter Carina, a fourth-grade student at Connolly School. The Glen Cove schools Teacher of the Year 2004, Eileen Abramson, was honored at the Glen Cove Board of Education meeting by board members, administration, the audience, and a half dozen of her third grade students (now in fourth grade) bearing flowers. A video by high school teacher Chris Barry, who runs the audio-visual department and TV studio, was greeted by rousing applause and the Teacher of the Year received a standing ovation.
