Congratulations are in order for three fourth-grade Landing School students, Karthik Hari, Erin McCabe, and Olivia Poglianich-Soria, who recently achieved the highest score of 800 on the grade four New York State English Language Arts exam. This year, as always, the PTA held its Reflections contest, giving students a topic and their choice of expression. This year's topic was "Signs of Courage" and Elias Blinkoff of Gribbin School wrote an award-winning essay on the subject, earning him a win on the New York State level. Glen Cove High School is in the prestigious and enviable position this year of being the home school of the first- and second-place winners of the Nassau County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest. Congratulations to Kara Truzzolino, first-place winner and Jeffrey Ian Moore, second-place winner. Both will receive substantial scholarships toward college. Jaclyn Bruce, GCHS Class of 2001, has been named to the Dean's List at the Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts for the spring 2003 semester. Jaclyn is finishing her sophomore year and is majoring in speech communication. (Glen Cove Record-Pilot, June 19th, 2003)

The United States Achievement Academy announced that Scott Arnone, a student at Glen Cove High School, has been named a United States National Award Winner in Leadership by the academy. Scott is the son of Ruth and Michael Arnone of Glen Cove. (Glen Cove Record-Pilot, April 24th, 2003)
Tamra Spector, a 1999 graduate of Glen Cove High School, won Tufts University's Music Award for the most outstanding music student of the year. She also won the prestigious Elizabeth Verveer Tischler Competition for musical performance. These awards are accompanied by a generous cash prize. Tamra studied vocal performance and sociology for the past four years at Tufts University and will graduate magna cum laude in May. (Glen Cove Record-Pilot, April 24th, 2003)

Seth B. Schapiro of Glen Cove has been named to the Dean's List for the winter quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology. A second-year student in RIT's College of Computing and Information Sciences, Seth is studying software engineering. The New York State Council of School Superintendents recently recognized Dr. Mary Ellen Freeley, superintendent of Glen Cove Schools, for her "exemplary service as a member of the faculty of the superintendents' academy." Dr Freeley has served as an academy faculty member for the past three years. In that capacity, she has facilitated the professional development certificate program designed to enhance the leadership skills of practicing superintendents. Dr. Freeley was chosen by the State Superintendents' Council to serve on the academy faculty in recognition of her outstanding leadership ability. She recently stepped down from that position in order to devote her time to the presidency of the Nassau County Superintendents' Association. (Glen Cove Record Pilot, February 27, 2003)
