Students

December 2000

For the first time, the Glen Cove Mock Trial team has won first place in both of its fall invitational tournaments, (defeating) the host team of Wheatley High School, Roslyn High, and Hicksville High. The Glen Cove team will now begin to prepare for the 2001 New York State Bar Association competition which is held at Mineola Supreme Court and supervised by state and federal judges. November 2000

Glen Cove Finley Middle School students Olin Fender, 8th grade, Vincent McPhillip, 7th grade, and Michael Ding, 6th grade have been chosen as three of 70 students to be named a Long Island Young Scholar of Mathematics and have been accepted by the Institute of Creative Problem Solving f or Gifted and Talented Students, SUNY College Old Westbury, to pursue mathematics and science studies. The 70 students who were selected... competed against 751 of the top ranking students on Long Island and were in the top 1/10th of one percent in math of all students on Long Island. The first competition 0f the 2000-01 school year culminated with a first-place trophy for the Glen Cove High School Mock Trial team... at the Seventh Annual Great Neck North invitational Tournament. John Bolton, Esq., a Glen Cove High School graduate, is the attorney coach of the team and Emily Bradford is the teacher advisor. (Glen Cove Record Pilot, November 23, 2000)

...members of the Big Red team were honored with their selection as All-County and All-Conference players. Congratulations to Jeff Rudloff, Zhibargo Simmons and Charles McCullough All-County; Dave Paskoff All-County Honorable Mention, and Sean Basdavanos and Jason Hopkins All-Conference. Glen Cove High School seniors Kamila Lis and Russell Koegler were among the 70 students worldwide invited to attend the Global Young Leaders Conference, a project of the nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization, The Congressional Youth Leadership Council, headquartered in Washington, DC. October 2000

Antonio Escamilla, Jr., a 16-year-old senior in Glen Cove High School, will be awarded an aviator's license within the coming year. Antonio is in Nassau Tech's Aviation Operations course on school day mornings, returning to Glen Cove other academic courses. Antonio was recently recommended, for the second consecutive year, to have his biography published in the Who's Who Among American High School Students. .(Glen Cove Record Pilot, October 26, 2000)

Jessica Brondo, GCHS Class of 2000, has been awarded a Country Glen Center Community Scholarship in recognition of outstanding leadership and volunteer activities in the communities and schools. .(Glen Cove Record Pilot, October 26, 2000)

On September 28, the Long Island University's Institute for Sustainable Development released a study on the quality of life in Glen Cove. Glen Cove scored well with its low crime rate, the decline in toxic waste, good recycling programs, the high number of high school students going to college, a decrease in the incidents of breast cancer and having more affordable housing than almost any other community in the county. Glen Cove was a test case for this study and will probably serve as a national model for what communities can do to improve residents' quality of life. (Glen Cove Record Pilot October 5, 2000)


September 2000

Antonio Escamilla, a student in Glen Cove High School, recently took part in Presidential Classroom's Future World Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C., joining almost 400 high school juniors and seniors from 32 nations. The students spent a week exploring issues in international relations, diplomacy and the changing world economy. (Glen Cove Record Pilot September 28, 2000)


August 2000

John Sebastiano, a ninth grader at Robert M. Finley Middle School, participated this summer in the successful debut of the BOCES Nassau Tech Aviation Academy's Summer Institute at Republic Airport in Farmingdale. The Institute's program gave John the opportunity to take introductory flight lessons as well as study other aspects of aviation. (Record Pilot, August 24, 2000)


July 2000

Congratulations to Christina McDonald , a fourth grader at Landing School and to Sue Graziosi, a fourth grader at Connolly School for rendering a perfect 800 score on the English Language Arts statewide assessment test. (Glen Cove Record Pilot, July 6, 2000)

American history honors students argued two modern Supreme Court cases at Glen Cove High School. …Three of the justices for the “Supreme Court” were practicing attorneys John Bolton, Esq., Christopher Gegwich, Esq., and James P. O’Brien, Esq….The other four justices were students from the Advanced Placement American History class, Malgorzata Kurjanska, Vedran Lekic, Kamila lis, and Emma Worth. June 2000

Glen Cove High School sophomore Zhivargo Simmons was selected as a member of the 2000 pre-season All Metro Football team. He was chosen from among 6 000 returning high school players in the New York metropolitan area. (Glen Cove Record Pilot, June 8, 2000)

In only its second year as a varsity team, the Glen Cove High School Girls Lacrosse team finished in second place in their league and managed to earn some coveted awards. For a fledgling team to have garnered one of only two All-County awards given at this level …is quite an accomplishment. (Glen Cove Record Pilot, June 22, 2000)

The Glen Cove High School Masquers Society inducted 19 new members into its chapter on May 31. A feature of the ceremony was the awarding of honors from the New York State Theater Education Association to seniors Pakhi Andreasen and Ben Pryor who have exhibited outstanding attitude and professionalism in the arts. Russell Keogler, a junior at GCHS, recently attended the Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. and New York City. The Conference concluded in the Global Summit at the UN where students assumed the roles of world leaders in and international crisis simulation. Russell was the only student chosen to address the Conference twice.

As part of their health and physical fitness curriculum, Finley Middle School fifth and sixth grade students in Mr. Johanson’s and Mr. Tripp’s health classes studied the negative effects of tobacco use on the body.   Students launched a petition signature and letter-writing campaign asking the Glen Cove City Council and local businesses to remove cigarette advertising from establishments in close proximity to schools. Mayor Suozzi and the city council voted to hold a public hearing on a proposed new ordinance stating, in part, that no tobacco product may be advertised 1000 feet from schools, day-care centers, playgrounds, or youth centers. …the city council voted to enact the legislation during their May meeting. Graduates

October  2000

Paul Miller, who ranked 12th in his class at Glen Cove High School, was a recent recipient of a scholarship from the Glen Cove Elks Club. He is attending Marist College and will major in communications in line with his plan to become a sports broadcaster.  (Gold Coast Gazette, October 19, 2000)

Karla Pettaway, a Glen Cove High School graduate, has been awarded a President's Student Service Scholarship by the Corporation for National Service and Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Announced by President Clinton and administered by the Corporation for National Service, the President's Student Service Scholarships are awarded to high school juniors or seniors to recognize an exemplary record of community service. She is now attending St. John's University in Queens. (Gold Coast Gazette, October 19, 2000)

Carol Nelson, a 1957 graduate of Glen Cove High School, was one of the Honorees at the 16th Annual Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce Small Business-Person-of-the-Year Breakfast. Carol, of Glen Floors, became the first woman President of the Glen Cove Rotary Club in 1991 and is currently on the Board of Directors for the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce, the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District and the North Shore Historical Museum.(Glen Cove Record Pilot, October 26, 2000)


September 2000

Victoria Zito, a 1996 graduate of Glen Cove High School, has completed a course of study for physician's assistant at Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. She graduated magna cum laude in August, 2000. (Glen Cove Record Pilot September 28, 2000)

Amber Abrams, a Glen Cove High School Graduate, (Class of 2000), and Stephanie Graziosi, a junior, were selected as team Most Valuable Players at the FAST Softball National held last month in Kissimme, Florida. Amber also earned starting third base for the Columbia University Lions, a Division I team in the Ivy League. Stephanie is presently first catcher at the high school as well as the varsity soccer goalie. Two fine Glen Cove scholar athletes! (Glen Cove Record Pilot September 28, 2000)


August 2000

Howard Davis, a 1976 graduate of Glen Cove High School, won the lightweight title that same year at the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in  Montreal. Of all the boxers whose careers were launched by the Games, Howard Davis was considered the most promising. He is a "Long Islander of the Century" nominee. (Newsday, August 16, 2000)

Kim Ravener, a 1999 graduate of Glen Cove High School, soon to be a sophomore at Harvard University, along with her sister Lisa, presently attending GCHS, spent this summer working as an intern in the office of Nassau  County legislator Brian Muellers. (Record Pilot, August 17, 2000)


June 2000

Top of Their Class: Vedran Lekic, Glen Cove High School Valedictorian. Grade Point Average: 107.4 (weighted). Activities: Piano, theater, mock trial. College: Harvard University, astrophysics. (Newsday, 18 June, 2000) 

David Brown, a Glen Cove High School senior who is graduating on June 23, 2000, is one of 100 students in the nation and one of six students from New York to have received an early appointment to the US Air Force Academy. … The Air Force Academy is ranked as one of the country’s three most selective universities. Mr. and Mrs. John Barbito of Glen Cove are proud to announce that their son, John, received a Doctorate in Medical Sciences from the Medical College of Toledo on June 2, 2000.  …Dr. Barbato is a 1994 alumnus of Hofstra University and a 1990 graduate of Glen Cove High School. Nassau County Police Commissioner William Willet…made a special trip home to Glen Cove on June 16 for the award ceremony heralding the next group of Rising Stars in Finley Middle School. Willet grew up in Glen Cove’s Landing neighborhood and attended Landing School, Glen Cove Junior High School, and Glen Cove High School.  .. he recalled the days when he and his buddies, current Glen Cove Police Chief Tim Edwards and Jack Burns were classmates. May 2000

Byron Hagewood ... has received two awards from the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Hagedorn is... a 1977 graduate of Glen Cove High School. (Glen Cove Record Pilot, May 11, 2000) 

Jason Crosby, a Glen Cove High School graduate, recently performed for the second year at The Morgan Park Summer Music Festival.

Teachers

October 2000

Glen Cove High School AP physics teacher Edward Pascuzzi will present the monthly talk in the Astronomical Roundtable series on October 16 at The Book Revue in Huntington Village. Mr. Pascuzzi's talk is entitled Astronomy for All Ages which is the title of his most recent book which he co-authored with Phil Harrington. (Glen Cove Record Pilot, October 12, 2000)


September 2000

Glen Cove High School teacher Tracy Laderer and her students recently spent a few hours each afternoon this past week informing residents about the S.T.O.P. Program (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants). S.T.O.P. is sponsored once a year by Waste Management Inc. and offers Glen Cove residents a safe and environmentally sound way to dispose of toxic and hazardous waste that is not accepted by the curbside recycling program. August 2000

Amy Mendrinos, a fourth grade teacher at Landing Elementary School in Glen Cove, has been chosen as the grand prize winner of Noggin's Secret of Your Suspense Sweepstakes. Noggin is the educational TV channel and website from Nickelodeon and Sesame Workshop. This winning entry was an illustrated pop-up book created by Ms. Mendrinos' students. June 2000

Glen Cove High School English teacher Dan Smith and English teacher Teresa McHale have been selected for recognition as a 2000 Educator of Excellence by the executive board of the New York State English Council. … The two teachers are being cited for cultivating excellence for the next generation by demanding much of themselves and their students…(Glen Cove Record Pilot, June 22, 2000)

The Nassau Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AHPERD) has honored Mary Robinson Berhang, the Glen Cove school district's athletic director, as the recipient of the association's Physical Education Director Recognition Award of the Year.
