Coalition for Glen Cove

Meeting of October 24, 2005 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church

Minutes

The speaker for the November 14 meeting will be Susan Breen, the Glen Cove School District Coordinator of English and Language Arts.

The speaker for the December 12 meeting will be Dr. Shari Camhi, the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Technology.

There are two school board seats, those of Janet Bates-Wilkins and Kurt Schmeller up for election in 2006. We hope that they will both run again.

Betty Cammisa brought up the subject of SAT preparation programs:

The Glen Cove School District web site has a link with http://www.testprepreview.com/ , a commercial test preparation company that has free practice tests. However, a complete set of SAT practice tests costs $49.95.

The North Shore School District web site has a link with the College Board. The College Board web site is free for parents and the school district pays $3 per student. The web site demo is http://www.collegeboard.com/srpschooldemo/

Many parents, especially from low-income families, do not know the importance of the SATs and the preparation courses that are available. Betty Cammisa will put together a descriptive list of preparation courses and their costs. Don Scarl will try to arrange meeting of Glen Cove ministers who could spread the word about SAT tests.

A chapter of the National Honor Society is being organized at the middle school.

A school district committee has been formed to look for new software and to reorganize the school district’s web site.

Helen Kotzky, Don Scarl, and John DeMarino will update the Coalition PowerPoint Presentation about the Glen Cove schools and will arrange to give the presentation to community groups and meetings at which Coalition members invite their neighbors to see the presentation.

Last year Sean Dwyer offered to talk to Boys and Girl Scout leaders and perhaps present our PowerPoint presentation about our schools. It would also be helpful to get lists of the names, phones, and email addresses of Scout parents.
