Minutes

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 7:30 PM

Dr. Laurence Aronstein, Glen Cove superintendent of schools, was at the meeting.  Some of the topics he spoke about were:

  • There are 11 new administrators/supervisors this year.
  • Develop a relationship and talk with administrators/supervisors, school board, teachers and students.
  • There are 24 new teachers this year.
  • The fifth grade move to elementary schools was flawless.  All of the renovations were ready for the start of the school year.
  • The Deasy parking problem was taken care of.
  • The alternative high school is in the Boys/Girls Club.  There are 15 students in the alternative high school.  The cap will be only 30 students..
  • The school district leadership has been unstable.  There were 7 superintendents during 16 years.  Dr. Aronstein has told the school board that he will be here for at least 10 years.
  • Leadership Academy – Teacher leaders.  Also, there will be a Leadership Academy for students.
  •  “Parents should help their children with their schoolwork.  However, ask questions, don’t give them the answers.”
  • Mutual respect:  union vs. superintendent.
  • The high school is his top priority.
  • Goals:  Board of Education – superintendent – principals – administrators/supervisors.
  • Douglas Reeves' report on 90/90/90 schools shows that even schools with 90% of students eligible for free or reduced price lunches and 90% minority students could have 90% of their students meeting state reading standards.
The report is at:“High Performance in High Poverty Schools:  90/90/90 and Beyond” by Douglas B. Reeves http://www.sabine.k12.la.us/online/leadershipacademy/high%20performance%2090%2090%2090%20and%20beyond.pdf
