Coalition for Glen Cove Minutes

Monday, January 17, 2005, 7:30 PM

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

Joseph Hinton, the high school principal, was our invited guest.  Mr. Hinton gave us a profile of the Glen Cove Class of 2004.  Eighty-nine percent of our graduating students are going to college.  Some of our graduates are going to Boston University, Cornell University, Duke University, Georgetown University, etc.  The profile of the Class of 2004 is on the Glen Cove Schools website.

Mr. Hinton was asked how the high school could help the community approve the budget.  Mr. Hinton said:

The high school has produced an Art and Music Fair last year.  This year the Glen Cove community should know about the Art and Music Fair.

The students who are in the Participation in Government classes are helping to register students and informing them about getting out to vote for the school budget.

Two of our high school sports students are All Americans.  The community still does not know about it.

Because of the austerity budget, the high school teachers have been reduced (5 teachers).  The class size has been high.

The budget needs to be approved this year.  The Coalition will send a letter to the Board of Education and Central Administration.  The Coalition will have some suggestions about how the community would approve the budget.  At this meeting, some suggestions came up:

The Glen Cove School District has some low poverty students.  Will test scores go down due to the austerity budget?  Can test scores go up if we had more money for our schools?

Have more people get out to vote by going door-to-door with your neighbors.  The community has a civic responsibility to vote for our schools.

The Glen Cove School District should send a newsletter every month to all households about what our students have accomplished.

Dan Russell, who is now the public relations person for the school district, has done the Glen Cove City website.  Perhaps, he can create a website for the school district.

Apparently, the community was angry over the last administration.

The Board of Education needs to vote 7-0 for this year’s budget.

Have absentee ballots when people go into the schools, such as, concerts, plays, etc.
