Coalition for Glen Cove Minutes Monday, December 13, 2004 St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 7:30 PM The Board of Education will hold a community meeting about moving the fifth graders from Middle School to Connolly/Landing School. The discussions about the program should be · Is it beneficial for the fifth graders, · Will additional classrooms be mobile, · Will taxpayers be burdened with the cost? According to the Board, Performance Contracting money will balance the cost of the program. The Board will also conduct a budget meeting with the Glen Cove community. The Locust Valley School District had a survey on their web site about their second budget vote. Kathy Weber will talk to the Glen Cove Board about having a community survey about the budget. The Board could put it on the website, send out a bulk mailing or give the survey to churches, IAC, Avalon Apartments, the Regency, etc. What can the Board do to have the community approve the budget? The Board has to promote the budget by marketing the school district. Previously, the community only got newsletters about the budget. The Board should focus on the schools, i.e., the students. This is a marketing issue. The community needs to know more about the schools. There are not enough of our students in the local newspapers and there are none of our students in Newsday. Should the Board have a monthly newsletter with a bulk mailing? Our community should know that our programs, such as drama, music, sports, AP scholars, etc., are outstanding. Also, this newsletter could have stories about our former graduates and former students who live in Glen Cove. Rather then focusing on the budget and taxes, the Board should focus on the children. Should the Coalition do a mass mailing about the budget? Don Scarl would like members of the Coalition to email him about what the Board of Education should do to have the community approve the budget. Please, only write two sentences. Don Scarl will send out a new list of the Glen Cove community leaders and agencies. The people on the list will be sent this new list. The Coalition would like to invite the principals to our meetings. We would like to have the High School principal, Joe Hinton, at our meeting in January. The January meeting will have a discussion about school board candidates. These are the candidates: Helen Kotzky, Fred Moore, Sean Dwyer, Howard Robertson, Drew Fonrose, John DeMarino and Bill Richardson. The Coalition will support two candidates. Submitted by Bob Desiano |
