Mayor Holzkamp would like to make the Glen Cove Community, as well as, the Coalition aware of the many programs available to Glen Cove’s youth. She went on to describe the multitude of activities and services offered by the Glen Cove Youth Board.

Glen Cove Youth Board Programs and Services:

Ronnie Lavine commented that the Connolly School Site Based Committee had discussed the need for and importance of a mentoring program. She felt working with the Youth Board on this matter would be a tremendous help to the schools. Ted Holmes recommended publishing the numerous Youth Board programs in the local papers. Lorri Prince further suggested publicizing in the school newsletter.

Mayor Holzkamp shared her concerns about the movie theater situation. The amount of youth lingering around the area has become unruly. Mayor Holzkamp has spoken to the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Freeley, in regard to this matter. Mayor Holzkamp feels the situation has improved.

Helen Kotzky commented that the kids need to get involved in creating their own activities. Carol Sucharski noted Teen Night at the YMCA as a huge success. On Saturday evenings 8th –12th graders are granted access to the entire YMCA facility, including the pool, weight room, and basketball court.

Richard Tortoricci questioned Mayor Holzkamp about the use of the Coles School. Mayor Holzkamp explained that it was bought from the Glen Cove School District in order to retain City control of the property.

Mayor Holzkamp informed the Coalition that the taxes from the Avalon Bay Development would result in 3 ˝ million dollars to the Glen Cove School District within the next five years.

In addition to the numerous programs and services offered by the Glen Cove Youth Board, the Glen Cove Parks and Recreation has many programs as well. These include city camp and a wide variety of athletic leagues such as soccer, baseball and football.

Lori Holmes reiterated the need to publicize all of these programs.

Don Scarl introduced Diane Yatauro, candidate for Nassau County Legislator, and Charles Lavine, candidate for City Council.
