The State Legislature voted for a 2 week extension
for school district budget votes. The date has been changed from May 21st
to Tuesday, June 3rd. The Legislature is also in favor of restoring cuts
to education funding. Pataki says he will veto this, but can be
overridden if 2/3rds of legislators vote yes to restoring cuts.
Anyone wishing to run for school board has until May
13th to file their petition. At this time, petition papers for an
additional candidate have been picked up at Thayer House, but the person
has not yet announced their candidacy.
Rich Tortorici will be running for school board with
the support of the Coalition. A flier has been prepared with his
photograph, resume, philosophy and goals. This will be distributed to our
mailing list, along with a sample ballot and information on this year's
budget.
Rich and Don also plan to distribute "palm cards" at
the local supermarkets, especially if there is more than one candidate.
The Coalition will place one or two ads in local
papers, depending on need, as the election and budget vote approach.
The Coalition would like to see more minority members
of our community at school board meetings. It has been suggested that a
school board meeting be held at the Girls and Boys Club this coming
year.We will contact Reverand Williams of the Baptist Church and Francine
Santoro, Chairperson of the Diversity Committee, as well as school board
members to facilitate this idea. We will also contact La Fuerza Unida and
Father Costa of St. Patrick's to get their suggestions on how to reach out
more toour Hispanic community members.
Open School Day was a success, with approximately 12
community leader visitors touring a school of their choice. Thank you
Maria Reyes for organizing this event!
Leslie Whitely will host the Annual Real Estate
Breakfast at the Landing School on June 3rd at 10AM.
