Coalition for Glen Cove

Minutes of the June 3, 2002 Meeting

The candidate we endorsed for school board, Doug Brown, won by a wide margin. He received 65% of the votes.

The budget passed with 59% of the votes. Coles School sale was approved with 70% of the votes.

We would like to organize a Coalition Brunch in order to recognize school board members as they finish their service to the community. This year's brunch would thank Bill Boeddener for his 5 years on the board. Don will contact Bill and his wife to invite them and to get a list of people he would like to invite. School administrators and current board members would also be invited.  The brunch will probably take place in July at Steamboat Landing.  This event is not a fund-raiser, but would cost approx. $25 per person to cover costs of the invitations and brunch.

There are still 2 more school board meetings coming up on Monday, June 10 and 17th. The agenda for each can be seen prior to the meetings on the school website.

Officers for 2002-2003

President:                Don Scarl

Vice-President:        Rich Tortorici

Treasurer:                Lorri Prince

Secretary:                Helen Kotzky

Chuck Kutruff will be sending out thankyous to all those who contributed to our spring fundraising letter.

Al and Joanna Miller will help out with mailings to our members without e-mail.

We would like to continue to interview members of our school faculty and/or staff.  This year we had Mr. Dale Zurbrick, music teacher at the high school and Mr. Joseph Hinton, the HS Principal.  Some ideas for next year include
1) Dr. Susan Moor, Head of Guidance and Social Work:  this is currently being undertaken by Janet Brown and will be ready for publication in the fall, probably in 2 installments.  2)  Testing and Placement Services/ School Psychologists: this will be done by Joanna Miller.  We are open to other ideas...perhaps Sports director Mary Berhang or Mock Trial Team Coordinator Emily Bradford.  We need interviewer/writers!

We are considering joining the Citizen Action Alliance for Quality Education, a group which lobbies in Albany . We need people to check out their website to determine if this is appropriate for us.

We would like to invite Carl McCall who has a good record in education to speak. We need someone to invite him and arrange a date, time and place.  Richard Mills or John Hildebrand would also be interesting speakers...we need someone to take this on.

How about getting the Long Island section of the NYTimes to report on elections prior so that even more people will be informed of the election day and the issues school districts face.

We need someone who is good at photography to take pictures at our events. Please volunteer.

Doug and Rich will send thankyous to all those who signed their petitions this spring.
