Coalition for Glen Cove

Minutes of Meeting December 10, 2001

The Coalition has joined the Glen Cove InterAgency Council, a group of 45 agencies who provide services to people in Glen Cove. Don Scarl attended the last Council meeting. In February Don will make a presentation to the IAC about the Glen Cove schools and the Coalition.

Bob Pryor’s interview with Dale Zurbrick was published in the Glen Cove Record Pilot December 6. Sally Zweibach was appreciative of Dale’s commentary about the importance of finding someone who can carry on his work when he retires next August. When she retired, neither the drama class she taught nor the drama club survived. She feels strongly that the drama program provided opportunities to many students and should be reinstated. Both Sally and Dale have served on the New York State Regents Theater Committee.

Dr. Joanna Ehre, a retired school psychologist, is planning to interview the school district’s psychologist. Janet Brown is planning an interview with Dr. Susan Moore, Director of Guidance. Sally Zwiebach is planning to interview Joe Hinton, Principal of the GC High School. Sam Dudley plans to interview Frank Bouza, the director of buildings and grounds.

Don Scarl attended a PTA Budget Committee meeting and was encouraged by the Committee’s efforts of getting information to the public about the details of the budget and promoting its benefits to the community. The Committee will ask each PTA unit to prepare a brochure showing the achievements of its school during the past year. The Committee may also seek out information as to the needs of the school district and try to bring that information to the community as well.

Sally Zwiebach suggested that the Coalition write a letter to the papers or take an advertisement describing our activities and membership

Fern Lindenbaum has updated a list of community organizations and their leaders.

Don suggested that potential school board candidates identify issues that they deem important and prepare to make statements at a future meeting.  There will be a ballot vote for Coalition endorsement.

Sally Zwiebach suggested that the issue of students cutting classes be addressed by 1) engaging students in activities such as sports, drama, and other clubs that keep them interested in school, 2) disciplining students who cut, and 3) assuring that every student with excessive cuts is interviewed by a guidance counselor or psychologist and given a chance to talk about problems he or she has at school or at home.

Sally offered to find a place and costs for the fundraiser brunch.  March was discussed as good timing. We will ask Sophie Zimmerman whether she will help again with collecting and accounting for money.  Raffles were discussed.

The Coalition meeting day and time  for the spring has been set for Monday night at 7:30 P M. at St. Paul’s, which seems to be the most convenient for the most members.

Don Scarl
