A public meeting to discuss school topics was arranged by Doug Brown and held on Tuesday, October 2nd was attended by about 35 community members. Mayoral candidates Mary Ann Holzkamp and David Zatlin answered questions posed by audience members. Also present to field questions were candidates for City Council, Albert Granger and Frank O’Regan.

Fern Lindenbaum has composed a list of approximately 90 community leaders. This list will be used to help inform the various community groups about school events, activities, budget facts, and to invite leaders to visit our schools.

Sam Dudley, Janet Brown, Joanna Miller and Bob Pryor will be interviewing school personnel for the local newspapers. To date the following interviews are planned:

Frank Bouza, Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds
Dr. Susan Moor, Director of Guidance (Glen Cove High School)

The Coalition took out a 1/2 page ad in the Deasy-Landing dinner program to support this event.

High School Drug Testing Program - An informational meeting will be held on October 22nd at the high school. Coalition members are urged to become informed by attending this meeting.

The Coalition is working on arranging speakers for upcoming meetings. We are interested in hearing John Hildebrand, Education writer at Newsday, Carl McCall, NYS Treasurer currently running for Governor, and Steve Sanders, head of the Education Committee.

Father Hutchings has offered to coordinate a discussion on violence in the schools, using materials from the American Psychological Association.

Donald Scarl reported the Board of Education has agreed to a 3 1/2% increase in next year’s budget before conducting a needs assessment and looking into economic concerns. Donald asked the Coalition to support him as he will voice his concern at the upcoming meeting on October 29th.

The Coalition will set up a voter registration table at the community BID Fall Festival, to be held on October 20th.

We are still looking for Coalition members to chair a fundraising brunch in the spring.
