Coalition for Glen Cove

Coalition for Glen Cove

Minutes of September 17, 2001

Held at St. Paul’s Church 7:00 p.m.

We are taking a half-page ad for $50 in the program booklet for the Deasy/Landing Auction Dinner on November 5th. We will also take ads, if requested, in the Gribbin/Connolly School, Finley Middle School, and High School booklets.

Coalition meetings will now be on Mondays at 7:30 PM in St. Paul’s church. This is because there is a class in the St. Paul’s meeting room on Tuesdays at 7 PM. We hope that this change does not prevent people from participating in our meetings and we hope that it provides an opportunity for others to participate for the first time.

Doug Brown has arranged for the Glen Cove mayoral candidates to speak at a public meeting to discuss the relationship between the City of Glen Cove and the School District.  This meeting will be on Tuesday, October 2 at St. Paul’s at 7PM.

We want to get people such as John Hildebrand of Newsday, Cart McCall and Steve Sanders to come to speak to us.  The format could possibly take the form of a Round Table discussion.

Fr. Doug Hutchings has offered to lead a discussion on the topic of violence in schools today.

If you would like to coordinate one of these meetings, let Don Scarl know.

We have also been discussing a meeting to look for common ground between those who have spoken out for and against the schools. Dr. Freeley and possibly Joe Hinton and/or Carl La Pointe were suggested as representatives of the administration. We would send invitations to those who wrote letters to the editor in the local papers and to the members of the School Board. They would be invited to share their beliefs and concerns with us in an open discussion. We will try to write an agenda and a list of discussion questions and choose a moderator.

If our members have any suggestions, opinions or thoughts about a School Board candidate who should receive the support of the Coalition, please share these ideas with the membership by attending monthly meetings and/or communicating through the Coalition’s E Mail address or contacting Don.  Members of the Coalition know that their opinion matters.

We will form a brunch committee to plan our early spring fund-raiser.

The next Coalition meeting will be on: Monday, October 15th at 7:30 PM at St. Paul’s (Note: change of Day and Time.)

Respectfully submitted,

Jean Kuttruff
