Coalition for Glen Cove

Minutes of May 8, 2001 Meeting

Present at this meeting were 14 Coalition members who helped prepare final mailings for the school board election and budget vote.

Recently Achieved:

The recent brunch at Steamboat Landing was extremely successful. It was attended by approximately 30 people and raised almost $800. Thank you to Natheley McElrath and Ian Siegel for organizing the event.

The meeting with Assemblyman David Sidikman on Thursday, April 26th was also very worthwhile. He met with approximately 25 people at City Hall to address the issue of school state aid. He spoke of Glen Cove and Westbury as two unique districts that warrant substantial state aid and encouraged our community to organize a trip to Albany to voice concern in this regard. Thank you to Janet Bates-Wilkins for arranging this event.

The Coalition continues to meet with local civic groups. Donald Scarl attended an AARP meeting on May 7th. He reported that he enjoyed the meeting very much. Additionally, a meeting was attended at the Glen Cove Lion’s Club. Donald will speak with the Glen Cove Kiwanis Club in the near future.

Letters to the local papers during the past several weeks were well written, and came from many different people. It is important for members to stay involved and voice concerns.

The Coalition thanks Chris Swirnoff for designing flyers and news ads for the election. All present members commented on her efficiency and talent and her ability to work in a small window of time!

Maureen Tracy has been putting signs up in Glen Cove to support Natheley and Janet.

Janet will hand out flyers in the shopping centers on the Saturday before the vote. Janet handed flyers out on Lee Gray Court. Elsa Blanco distributed 100 flyers translated into Spanish.

For Discussion:

The Nassau County Legislature voted down the issue of taking over our certs. At the present time, the County faces financial burdens. The question was raised as to the state of a November 1999 lawsuit filed by the Board of Education with the County regarding the certs. It was felt that we should continue to write letters to our legislators to voice our concerns over this issue.

The Coalition wishes a speedy recovery to Carol Sucharski after her surgery. We will send our best wishes with flowers very shortly.

The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 12th at 7 PM at St. Paul’s Church on Highland Road.
