Agenda of Coalition for Glen Cove meetingMonday 3 November, 2003, 7:30 PM at St. Paul’s Episcopal ChurchOn the ballot on November 4th will be a proposition to increase the debt limit for small-city school districts. Years ago, when small-city districts did not vote on school budgets, a law was passed limiting the amount that small-city districts could borrow to 5% of the assessed value of all property in the district. Now that we do vote on the budget it would be good to remove that limit. Removing the limit would raise our borrowing limit to 10%, which is the limit in all other districts. Although Glen Cove’s borrowing is only about 1% of our assessed valuation, we should not have a limit that other school districts do not have. There will be a Policy Conference on Mandatory Testing for High School Graduation Wednesday, November 5th and Thursday, November 6th, 2003, 5:00 to 8:45 PM at the Rosenthal Auditorium of Queens College. For information call Queens College Department of Secondary Education 718-997-5150 There will be an Alliance for Quality Education Long Island Education Summit for Fair Public School Funding Saturday, November 15th, 2003, 8:30AM to Noon at Hofstra University. Should we take an ad for $100 for one year in the St. Paul’s Epistle? Helen Kotzky has arranged for James Lethbridge, the new middle school principal, to speak at the Coalition meeting on December 1st. Some of the suggestions we have had for speakers at the next few Coalition meetings are: Ira Cooper, the new mathematics coordinator; Susan Breen, the new English coordinator; Edward Thomas, the new high school assistant principal who can explain the new teaming program for ninth graders at the high school. Sophie Zimmerman, a long-time Coalition member and Spring Brunch chairperson is moving to Wilmington, Delaware. Visit the Coalition website at coalitiongc.org |
