Coalition for Glen Cove

Coalition for Glen Cove Meeting
Monday 9 December  2002, 7:30 PM at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

Agenda

Dr. Mary Ellen Freely, Glen Cove superintendent of schools, will speak at the December Coalition meeting about the new Federal “Leave No Child Behind” program.

Minutes of Coalition meetings are on the website at www.coalitiongc.org

Discussion

The Alliance for Quality Education is a coalition of over 200 organizations that advocate for public schools in New York State. The minutes of the Coalition November meeting at which Michael Kent, the Long Coordinator of the Alliance, spoke, describe some of the activities of the Alliance. The Alliance website is at www.alianceforqualityeducation.org

It seems appropriate for the Coalition to join the Alliance and add our voice to that of the 200 New York State public-school related organizations who already belong. There is no cost to the Coalition.

If any member objects to the Coalition joining the Alliance for Quality Education, please send an email to Don Scarl.

We hope we can persuade the Alliance for Quality Education to invite Carl McCall to Long Island to speak on education in New York state. Over 400 people attended a talk by Jonathan Kozol at Hofstra in November on inequalities in education.

Other speakers on education could be John Hildebrand (education editor at Newsday), Kenneth LaValle (chair of the New York legislature higher education committee), Gerald Bracey (author of Setting the Record Straight), Diane Ravitch (the premier historian of public education in the United States), Alphie Kohn (suthor of The Schools Our Children Deserve), David Berliner (co-author of The Manufactured Crisis), and Richard Rothstein (author of The Way We Were?).
