Recently Achieved
The Coalition has
endorsed Janet Bates-Wilkins and Natheley McElrath for school board. Robert Germino, Kurt Schmeller, and Rick Smith will be the
other candidates.
Natheley and Janet are
circulating a petition to put a referendum on the ballot to have the
school board term changed from five years to three years.
Janet organized a
public meeting on March 8 at which State Senator Carl Marcellino
listened to the concerns about State aid and school taxes of the
twenty people who attended. Janet presented an excellent description
of State aid and why the current formula is unfair to the Glen Cove
school system and Senator Marcellino explained how the budget is
determined and the competition between Upstate, New York City, and
the New York City suburbs. Senator Marcellino offered to return for
a second meeting after the State budget has been passed.
Don Ranieri arranged
for Janet, Natheley, and himself to speak at the Centre Club at the
Glen Cove Senior Center on March 5.About 150 Centre Club members
attended.
Jean Kuttruff and
Nancy Cleary organized a second visit by community leaders to the
schools on March 8.
A story about Leslie
Whitely’s Bookmark Contest was in the Record Pilot.
Chuck Kutruff has sent
a request for contributions to all Coalition members.

Leslie Whitely has
distributed bookmarks and will continue to do so.
Leslie Whitely is
working to organize a meeting between Dr. Freeley and Glen Cove,
Locust Valley, Sea Cliff, and Glen Head real estate brokers.
Barbara Dubin and
Ronnie Lavine will send absentee ballots requests to homes of
graduates of the past four years.
Sally Zwieback
attended a meeting of the Glen Cove AARP.
Natheley McElrath and
Ian Siegel are working on arranging a fund-raising brunch. Ian has
gotten price estimates from Steamboat landing and from the
Metropolitan.
Nancy Cleary is
working on a third visit to the schools by leaders of community
organizations.
We would like to speak
at meetings of civic groups.
We will ask churches about church groups we could speak to (Don
Ranieri)

collect numbers that show the performance of Glen Cove schools and
students in comparison with other districts.
Help people sign up
for STAR exemptions (Janet Bates-Wilkins
Explain mechanics of
elections to new voters
Put Coalition
literature in boxes in GC Library.
Involve parents of ESL
students and parents who do not now participate in their
children’s education.
Make list of losses
caused by austerity budget.
If you are willing to
help with any of the things above or below, just do it, and let us
know. We rely on Coalition members to choose their activities and
work on them independently. The Coalition, of course, can always
help with advice, information, and support. |
