Recently Achieved

Janet Bates-Wilkins arranged for a Coalition voter registration stand at the Glen Cove Craft Fair on September 9 and 10. Janet, Phyllis Spector, Amy Bikoff, Sally Zimmerman, Fern Lindenbaum, Ronnie Lavine, Doug Hutchings,  worked at the booth.

Don Scarl and Don Ranieri spoke at the September 5 Rotary meeting.

We had a press release in the papers about Dr. Freeley speaking at our last meeting.

Bruce Schor has asked the papers to state that students winning honors graduated from GCHS

The Coalition website is in operation.

The consensus seems to be that Tuesday is better than Thursday for a meeting night. We will try in October to meet at St. Paul’s.

Report from Coalition Against Charter Schools.  Coalition Against Charter Schools is gathering hundreds of names on a petition against charter schools. If you would like to sign call or email Gloria Wagner 674-4541.

Janet Bates-Wilkins will arrange a debate on education issues between Carl Marcellino and Larry Silverman

We should do a poll of those who voted in the last budget vote.

Panel discussion with leaders of Glen Cove Real Estate Firms.   (Leslie Whitely, Mary Ellen Freeley)

Dr. Freeley is working on making school board easier to understand and more popular. Suggestions: publish agenda a few days before meetings. Make copies of documents available. Publish minutes.

Dr. Freeley will write a “Superintendent’s column” for the papers once each month.

Panel discussion with Marcellino, Ackerman, Sidikman, Muellers

Bring  people (City Council, real estate people, school board, service club officers, and so on) into the schools to see what goes on. (Chris Swirnoff)

Ask churches about church groups we could speak to

Liaison with PTA, Boosters, Scholarship committee

Help people sign up for STAR exemptions

Nathaley suggested that board of education meetings be broadcast on video.

Maureen Tracy suggested that a video of the schools be made..

Explain mechanics of elections to new voters

Put Coalition literature in boxes in GC Library

Involve parents of ESL students

Each member bring one person to meeting.

Make list of losses caused by austerity budget.
